Is ClickHouse Better Than Postgres?

This seems unrelated. It’s not.

Because when you’re building a house — or a data system — you’re choosing between tools optimized for different workloads.

Postgres is your ranch house. It does everything. It doesn’t excel at anything, but it doesn’t fail spectacularly either. You can store your data, run your analytics, serve your API, and handle your queues in a single Postgres instance. It’s the slab foundation and rectangular layout of databases.

ClickHouse is your data warehouse garage. It’s incredible at one thing: columnar analytics at scale. But it’s terrible at transactions. Can’t do joins efficiently. Doesn’t have row-level security. You wouldn’t run your production application on ClickHouse any more than you’d sleep in your garage.

If you need real-time analytical queries over billions of rows — yes, ClickHouse crushes Postgres. I’ve seen queries that take 47 seconds in Postgres complete in 180 milliseconds in ClickHouse. That’s a 260x improvement.

But if you need a general-purpose database for your application, Postgres wins every time. ClickHouse can’t do UPDATE with subqueries. Can’t do foreign keys. Can’t do table-level security in any practical sense.

The analogy holds: what house style is the cheapest to build? The one that matches your actual needs, not your aspirational ones. Don’t build a two-story colonial with a turret because it looks cool. Don’t use ClickHouse because you heard it’s faster. Use the tool that fits the job.

Is ClickHouse completely free? Short answer: yes. The open-source version is Apache 2.0 licensed. No restrictions. No hidden fees. You can download it, install it on a single server, and query terabytes of data for exactly $0 in licensing costs.

Long answer: nothing is free.

ClickHouse needs memory. Lots of it. A production ClickHouse server with 1 TB of data will want 32–64 GB of RAM. That’s $200–$400/month on a cloud VM. Plus storage. Plus backups. Plus someone who knows how to tune it.

Postgres also runs on $20/month VPS for modest workloads.

So is ClickHouse completely free? The software is. The infrastructure isn’t.

But neither is a house. The cheapest house style still costs $100,000+ to build. The question is whether you’re paying for what you actually need, or paying legacy tax on features you’ll never use.


Three House Styles That Aren’t Cheapest But Sound Like They Are

1. The Cape Cod

People think Cape Cods are cheap because they’re small and simple. They’re wrong.

A Cape Cod has a steep roof (minimum 8:12 pitch) to shed snow. That steep roof wastes attic space and requires longer rafters. The second floor is usually in the roof — meaning dormers for any window, knee walls, and complex insulation.

In 2023, I priced a 1,200 sq ft Cape Cod in Massachusetts. The roof alone cost $14,000. A ranch of the same size with a 4:12 roof: $5,800. The Cape was $8,200 more — before dormers.

2. The Modular Home

Modular homes sound cheaper because they’re built in factories. And sometimes they are — 10–20% savings on labor. But modular homes require exactly the same site prep, foundation, utility connections, and finishes as stick-built.

Plus you pay for transport ($3,000–$8,000) and crane rental ($1,500–$3,000). And modular floor plans are limited by road width — you can’t transport a module wider than 16 feet without a special permit.

3. The Barndominium

Barndominiums exploded in popularity after 2020. They use steel frames and metal siding. Sounds cheap.

But steel costs have gone crazy. In 2025, a simple 40x60 barndominium shell was $55,000 for the steel alone. Then you need insulation (metal buildings are terrible at thermal performance), interior framing (because you can’t attach drywall to steel poles), and finishes.

But there are trade-offs. Manufactured homes depreciate like cars. They’re harder to finance. The ceiling height is usually 8 feet (not 9 or 10). The materials are thinner. And you can’t customize much.

If you’re building to live in for 5 years and sell — don’t buy manufactured. If you’re building for long-term occupancy on land you own — manufactured is literally the cheapest house style to build.

But for most people, a simple ranch on a slab is the sweet spot.


How to Actually Build Cheap: 7 Rules

I’ve refined these through three builds and consulting on a dozen more. These aren’t theory.

Rule 1: Pick a single roofline. One plane. One pitch. No valleys. No hips. No dormers.

Rule 2: Keep the footprint square or rectangular. Every L, T, or U shape adds cost. It also adds thermal bridging and air leakage points.

Rule 3: Put plumbing in one wall. Kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry should share a single plumbing chase. That’s one run of 4-inch waste pipe instead of three.

Rule 4: Standardize everything. One window size. One door size. One cabinet style. One flooring color. Custom is where profit margins live — for builders and material suppliers.

Rule 5: Skip the garage. Garages cost $15,000–$25,000 to build. Build it later as a separate structure if you need it.

Rule 6: Use engineered lumber for long spans. I-joists and LVL beams cost more per linear foot than dimensional lumber but they let you span 20+ feet without bearing walls. That eliminates expensive headers, beams, and posts.

Rule 7: Build on flat land. Every foot of slope adds $5,000–$15,000 in foundation costs. Test your lot before you design.

How do I calculate cost per square foot for a simple ranch?

Total all costs (materials + labor + permits + utilities + site prep) and divide by conditioned square footage. Don’t include garage, porch, or unfinished basement. National average for a basic ranch in 2025: $120–$180/sq ft. But in low-cost areas (Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia), you can hit $70–$90/sq ft with owner management.

Is a two-story house cheaper than a ranch?
